3 Exercises to Increase Mental Focus

However, mental focus and clarity of mind can be increased with the help of some concentration exercises. These exercises can be practiced at any time of the day and if pursued correctly, they will not only help to improve one's memory but also boost their awareness of the present moment. While meditation may seem quite effortless in terms of physical effort, one has to try very hard to focus his or her mind on the present moment. The subject has to sit in a quiet room where there are no distractions so he or she can close their eyes and breathe in a rhythmic manner.
The aim of the exercise is to eventually focus on the breathing pattern and let all other thoughts pass. This mere concentration exercise has shown to calm one's mind and improve mental focus.
This exercise can be carried out within the quiet walls of one's home or even in a densely crowded place. The exercise requires the subject to count backwards in their mind from hundred to one. Once that has been accomplished, the subject can move on to a more challenging level where he or she counts backward again but this time using only the even numbers.
The third round will follow a similar pattern but the subject will count the odd numbers instead. The last level is the toughest where the subject must count backwards but skip every three numbers. If this exercise can be completed flawlessly, one will notice a significant improvement in mental focus.
In this exercise, the subject is expected to pick an object of his or her choice and observe every aspect of it. From the colour to the texture, from the direction of light to the shadows it is casting - every tiny aspect of the object has to be observed.
The challenge is to keep the mind from wandering off and wondering about other things. After the subject has observed this object, he or she must close their eyes and visualize it in their minds. If the subject can see the object and all its details with closed eyes, he or she is making noticeable progress with mental focus.
These are the basic exercises that one can begin with if he or she finds it difficult to focus on specific things and concentrate. There are many such similar exercises that can help individuals improve mental focus but they are more challenging and take a longer time to master. Upon completing these exercises successfully, people feel like they can concentrate much better than before and there is usually little need to pursue the tougher mental exercises.
